α-Enolase is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 1p36.3-p36.2.
Biochem/physiol Actions
α-Enolase catalyzes the dehydration of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate. This protein plays a key role in anaerobic metabolism under hypoxic conditions and may act as a cell surface plasminogen receptor during tissue invasion. Abnormal expression of α-enolase is associated with tumor progression in some cases of breast and lung cancer. It also has been identified as an auto antigen associated with Hashimoto′s encephalopathy and severe asthma.
