Hazard Information | Back Directory | [Uses]
O-Methylserine acts as a reagent for the synthesis of D-serine transporter inhibitors which are used pharmaceutically for the treatment of visual system disorders and enhancement of the visual functions. | [Definition]
ChEBI: O-Methyl-DL-serine is an alpha-amino acid. | [Synthesis]
1) Add 215 g of methyl acrylate to the reaction flask. The temperature of the reaction system was raised to 55°C and 500 g of bromine was added slowly and dropwise. The reaction was maintained for 1 hour. Subsequently, concentration was carried out under reduced pressure at 60 °C to remove the excess bromine. To the residue was added 1260 g of methanol and the mixture was cooled to -17 °C. At this temperature, 127 g of sodium methanol was added and the reaction was carried out for 5.5 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the methanol was removed by distillation under reduced pressure. 750 g of ammonia was added to the reaction mixture and the reaction was held at 20-25°C for 3 hours. Finally, 260 g of O-methyl-DL-serine was obtained by concentrated crystallization. | [References]
