White solid | [Synthesis]
5-Methylpyridin-2-ol (1 g, 9.16 mmol) was used as starting material and dissolved in 4 mL of carbon disulfide (CS2). Bromine (Br2, 0.47 mL) was slowly added to this solution at room temperature and the reaction mixture was stirred for 2 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, aqueous sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) was added to quench the reaction, followed by extraction of the reaction mixture with ethyl acetate (EtOAc). The organic layer was separated, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the solid product 3-bromo-2-hydroxy-5-methylpyridine (1.7 g, 98% yield). The structure of the product was confirmed by 1H-NMR (CDCl3): δ 7.73 (1H, s), 7.22 (1H, s), 2.10 (3H, s). | [References]
