The general procedure for the synthesis of didecyl disulfide from 1-iododecane is as follows: at room temperature, Na2S-3H2O (0.291 g, 2.2 mmol) was added to a solution of PEG-200 (2 mL) containing the alkyl halide (2 mmol) and C2Cl6 or CCl4 (1.5 mmol), which had been pre-placed on a magnetic stirrer. The reaction mixture was stirred continuously until the starting halide was completely consumed (reaction time of about 30 to 150 min). Upon completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was diluted with H2O (1 mL) and subsequently extracted with EtOAc-hexane (1:1, v/v; 4 x 2 mL). All organic extracts were combined, concentrated and purified by silica gel column chromatography. The target product didecyl disulfide was finally obtained in high yield (see Table 1). | [References]
