Steps:
Intermediate 1 : ethyl 6-methylpicolinate
To a solution of 6-methylpicolinic acid (2.0 g, 14.58 mmol) in ethanol (50 mL) sulphuric acid (1.2 mL) was added and the mixture was heated to reflux for 22 hours and then concentrated to dryness. The residue was dissolved in water (50 mL), sodium bicarbonate was added until pH 8-9 and it was extracted with ethyl acetate (3x40 mL). The combined organic layers were dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated to afford a yellow oil (1.88 g, 78%).1H-NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3 ): d =7.95 (d, J= 7.7 Hz, 1H), 7.72 (t, J= 7.7 Hz, 1H), 7.34 (d, J = 7.7 Hz, 1 H), 4.49 (q, J = 7.1 Hz, 2H), 2.67 (s, 3H), 1.44 (t, J= 7.1 Hz, 3H).
