Preparative Example 36.; A round bottomed flask was charged with 4-Chloro-benzonitrile (0.138 g, 13 mmol) and anhydrous ethanol (100 mL). Hydrogen chloride gas was then bubbled into the solution via dispersion tube. The reaction very exothermic and it was cooled in a water bath (220C) after stirring for 15 min. The solution was allowed to stand at room temperature overnight. The solvent was removed to provide intermediate 46 (2.38 g, 95%). MS: M + H =184.
