I(e).i Step i: 4-(carboxymethyl)benzoic acid
To a 25 mL round bottom flask, were added 2-(4-cyanophenyl)acetic acid (2.0 g, 0.0124 mol) and 20 mL aqueous potassium hydroxide solution (3.47 g, 0.062 mol). The reaction mixture was stirred at reflux temperature for 4 h. The reaction mixture was acidified to pH 3.0 with 3 N hydrochloric acid to get the precipitate. The precipitate was collected by filtration and dried under vacuum to get the title compound [1.8 g, 81 %]. FontWeight="Bold" FontSize="10" H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-ife): δ 12.64 (brs, 2H), 7.88 (d, = 8.1 Hz, 2H), 7.38 (d, [M+H]+.
