4-Hydroxymethyl-4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine (2.0 g, 10.0 mmol)Dissolve in HBr (48%, 40 mL) and add concentrated H2SO4 (10 mL) to the solution.The red solution was heated to reflux overnight, and after cooling to room temperature, the mixture was poured into 100 mL of ice water, and the pH value of the aqueous layer was adjusted to about 8.0 with Na2CO3,and extracted with chloroform until the organic layer was colorless, the combined organic layers were dried over MgSO4,The chloroform was removed by rotary evaporation in a vacuum to obtain 4-bromomethyl-4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine(2.4 g, 93%).
