(b) Synthesis of 3-Benzyloxyestra-1,3,5(10)-trien-17β-ol (41): To a solution of 3-benzyloxyestra-1,3,5(10)-trien-17-one (40, 2.70 g, 7.5 mmol) in THF (5.0 mL) and MeOH (30 mL) was added sodium borohydride (284 mg, 7.5 mmol) at 0° C. The reaction mixture was stirred for 30 min, then quenched with saturated aqueous NH4 Cl, and H2 O added. The precipitate was collected by filtration and washed with H2 O to afford 2.73 g of 41 (100% yield) mp: 118-119° C. 1 H NMR: δ 7.50-7.15 (m, 6H, aromatic), 6.83-6.67 (m, 2H, aromatic), 5.03 (s, 2H, --OCH2 Ph), 3.80-3.65 (m, 2H, 17α-H, --OH), 0.78 (s, 3H, 18-CH3); MS (EI): m/z 362 (M+).
