Steps:
Preparation of 3-(benzyloxy)picolinaldehyde (3-(benzyloxy)pyridin-2-yl)methanol (87 g, 400 mmol) was dissolved in anhydrous dioxane (80 mL). Manganese dioxide (351 g) was added and the mixture was heated for 2 hours at 80° C. The reaction mixture was filtered through celite and the filter cake was washed with ethyl acetate (300 mL). The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to yield a brown oil which solidified upon standing. (84.12 g, 98% yield). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.4 (d, 1H), 7.25-7.45 (m, 8H), 5.25 (s, 2H).
