Steps:

First, 4.59 g (114.44 mmol) of potassium hydride (KR) was added to 100 ml of tetrahydrofuran (TRF). A stoichiometric amount, 21.09 g (114.44 mmol), of 2,2,6,6- tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione (Rthd) was added to 100 ml of TRF. The Rthd dissolved in 100 ml of TRF was added dropwise to the KR and TRF mixture while stirring. Evolved R2 gas released during the procedure was released through a mercury bubblet The resultant mixture was stirred for 4 hours at room temperature to form a potassium 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione (K(thd)) solution.
