Interleukin is a group of cytokines that secrete proteins/signaling molecules initially expressed by white blood cells (leukocytes). Interleukin-1 alpha and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta) are cytokines involved in regulating immune response, inflammatory response, and hematopoiesis. Interleukin-1 β (IL-1 β), also known as a breakdown protein, is a cytokine protein encoded by the IL1B gene in the human body. The precursor of IL-1 β is cleaved by cysteine protease-1 (interleukin-1 β converting enzyme). The products of cytoplasmic thiol protease cleavage form mature IL-1 β. IL-1 β is a member of the interleukin-1 cytokine family. This cytokine is an important mediator of inflammatory response and participates in various cellular activities, including cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis.
