General procedure: ethyl (E)-3-ethoxyacrylate (5.0 g, 0.035 mol) was dissolved in 2 M aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (40 mL) and the reaction was refluxed for 4 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and the pH was adjusted to 3 with 4 M aqueous hydrochloric acid, followed by extraction with ethyl acetate. The organic phase was decolorized by activated carbon and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, then filtered and concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure to afford 3-ethoxyacrylic acid as a brown solid (1.8 g, 44% yield). | [References]
