General procedure for the synthesis of 3-chloro-5-nitrophenol from 1-chloro-3-methoxy-5-nitrobenzene: 1.65 g of 1-chloro-3-methoxy-5-nitrobenzene was mixed with 20.3 g of pyridinium hydrochloride and the reaction was heated to 200°C for 1 hour. Upon completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and allowed to stand overnight. Subsequently, 200 mL of water was added and the precipitated solid was collected by filtration and dried under vacuum. Finally, 860 mg of 3-chloro-5-nitrophenol was obtained in 56% yield of the theoretical value. Mass spectrometry (ESI+) analysis resulted in: m/z = 162 [M+H]+. | [References]
