2,4-Dimethyl-benzothiazole, is used in the preparation of quaternary salts of chalcogenites as photographic sensitizers. | [Synthesis]
[Step 2] Potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) (22.1 g) was mixed with water (35 mL), and a mixture of N-(2-methylphenyl)ethylthioamide (6.60 g), sodium hydroxide (3.69 g), and water (50 mL) made in Step 1 was added. The reaction system was stirred at 40°C for 2 hours. After completion of the reaction, it was cooled to room temperature and extracted twice with ethyl acetate (50 mL). The organic phases were combined, washed with saturated saline (50 mL), dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to afford 2,4-dimethylbenzothiazole (Compound 13) (2.82 g). The 1H-NMR (CDCl3) data of compound 13 were as follows: δ 7.66 (m, 1H), 7.24 (m, 2H), 2.85 (s, 3H), 2.73 (s, 3H). | [References]
