2-(3-Aminophenyl)ethanol is a useful compound for the synthesis of indolines and dihydrobenzofurans via iron and copper-catalyzed iodination and cyclization. | [Synthesis]
Step A: Synthesis of 2-(3-aminophenyl)ethanol
To a pressure reactor was added 3-nitrophenylethanol (3.0 g, 18 mmol), methanol (100 mL) and 10% palladium carbon catalyst (0.1 g, 0.08 mmol). The reaction system was subjected to 45 psi hydrogen pressure and the reaction was stirred at room temperature overnight. Upon completion of the reaction, the catalyst was removed by filtration through a diatomaceous earth pad, and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the target product 2-(3-aminophenyl)ethanol (2.44 g, 99% yield) in white solid form. The product was analyzed by LCMS to confirm that the molecular ion peak [M+H]+ m/z = 138.1, which is consistent with the theoretical value C8H11NO. | [References]
