7-Methoxy-2-naphthol may be used in the synthesis of new 1H-benzo[f]chromene derivatives. It may be used in the synthesis of 7-methoxy-2-naphthyl (MN)-derived xylosides in which the methoxy group served as a marker for NMR characterization and UV detection. | [General Description]
7-Methoxy-2-naphthol is a 7-substituted-2-naphthol. Crystal structure of 7-methoxy-2-naphthol has been reported. Reaction of 7-methoxy-2-naphthol with N-methyl-N-phenylhydrazine under thermal conditions has been reported. | [Synthesis]
General method: a mixture of 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene (500 mg, 2.64 mmol), dimethyl sulfate (0.5 ml, 5.3 mmol) and potassium carbonate (73.1 mg, 5.3 mmol) in acetonitrile (10 ml) was refluxed for 1 hour. After completion of the reaction, the solvent was removed by evaporation and the residue was poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed sequentially with water and brine, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and subsequently concentrated under vacuum. The crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatography to afford 7-methoxy-2-naphthol using hexane/ethyl acetate (15:1) as eluent. | [References]
