GENERAL METHOD: To a stirred solution of 8-methylquinoline 1-oxide (0.1 M) in anhydrous dichloromethane was slowly added phosphorous trichloride (1.2 eq.) at 0 °C, followed by the dropwise addition of N,N-dimethylformamide (0.5 eq.) under argon protection. The reaction mixture was gradually warmed to 25 °C and stirred continuously for several hours until thin layer chromatography (TLC) showed that the reaction was complete. Saturated aqueous sodium carbonate solution was slowly added to the reaction mixture and the pH was adjusted to 7~8. The organic and aqueous phases were separated and the aqueous phase was fully extracted with dichloromethane. The organic phases were combined, washed with saturated saline, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to give the crude product. The crude product was purified by fast column chromatography using petroleum ether/ethyl acetate (80:1) as eluent. | [References]
