In a 500 mL autoclave, 200 mL of ethanol, 3.51 g (0.01 mol) of 4-nitro-5'-phenyl-1,1':3',1''-biphenyl, and 0.4 g of 5% Pd/C catalyst were added. The reaction temperature was controlled to be 60 °C and the catalytic hydrogenation reaction was carried out under 0.2 MPa hydrogen pressure. After the reaction was completed, it was cooled to room temperature and the gas in the reactor was replaced with nitrogen. The reaction solution was filtered to remove the catalyst and subsequently the filtrate was concentrated to dryness. The crude product was recrystallized using a mixed solvent of ethyl acetate and toluene to afford 3.06 g of 5'-phenyl-[1,1':3',1''-biphenyl]-4-amine in 95.33% yield. | [References]
