Glutamic acid (or glutamate) functions as a neurotransmitter and also serves as a precursor to other neurotransmitters such as gamma-aminobutyric acid. Glutamic acid also plays a key role in many metabolic pathways that controls growth, reproduction, maintenance and immunity.
