2-Hydroxy-4-nitrobenzaldehyde (cas# 2460-58-4) is a compound useful in organic synthesis. | [Synthesis]
2-(Hydroxymethyl)-5-nitrophenol (13 g, 77 mmol) was mixed with manganese dioxide (26.7 g, 308 mmol) in ethyl acetate (250 mL). The reaction mixture was heated to 80 °C and the reaction was stirred at this temperature for 16 hours. After completion of the reaction, insoluble material was removed by filtration and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to give the crude product. The crude product was purified by column chromatography with the eluent of petroleum ether/ethyl acetate (1:3, v/v) to give 2-hydroxy-4-nitrobenzaldehyde (10.5 g) in 81.7% yield. | [References]
