The general procedure for the synthesis of 9-propyl-9H-carbazole from carbazole and bromopropane was as follows: carbazole (1.67 g, 10 mmol) and tetrabutylammonium bromide (0.322 g) were weighed, evacuated using an oil pump and then filled with nitrogen, and the cycle was repeated three times to ensure that the reaction system was under nitrogen protection. Dimethyl sulfoxide (40 mL) and 50% aqueous potassium hydroxide (8.0 g) were added to the system. Bromopropane (6.15 g, 50 mmol) was added dropwise under stirring conditions, followed by stirring the reaction mixture overnight at room temperature. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was extracted with a large amount of water and dichloromethane. The organic phase was washed with saturated brine and dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate. After filtration, most of the solvent was removed using a rotary evaporator. Finally, the product was purified by column chromatography using petroleum ether as eluent to give 9-propyl-9H-carbazole in 90% yield. | [References]
