(3) The residue from step (2) was dissolved in 1,4-dioxane (500-1000 mL), concentrated hydrochloric acid (500-1000 mL) was added slowly at 25°C and the reaction was stirred for 12 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the organic phase was separated by extraction using ethyl acetate.
